Freedom club night is a full nightclub for anyone aged 18 plus with a disability or a different ability. We run from Popworld nightclub in Southend and celebrated our 6th birthday in March 2024!
We often have themed nights with lots of giveaways and our Christmas snow parties are legendary! We celebrate guests birthdays with Freedom birthday cards and have our own merchandise range.
We have a full bar, are wheelchair friendly and have adjusted sound and lighting to suit our guests needs. Every Wednesday at 8pm we play the Bob Sinclair song, Freedom, as our anthem as the words are appropriate.
We run every Wednesday from 6.30pm to 10pm and support the `Stay up Late` Campaign (#nobedtimes).
Entry is £5 and carers come free. Carers are included in all of our nights.
We are happy to show people around before bringing a group or an individual so you can see what we are all about.
Our story
Freedom started at Dick DeVignes in 2018. During COVID we took the night onto Facebook Live and Mixcloud from our dining room using a green screen to create a club look. Neighbours and the local community joined us and we reached care facilities locally and in other parts of the UK. After lockdown we ran from CoCo's and Rhythm Room before moving to Popworld.
We have built the night on hard work and networking. All money taken on the door is reinvested into the night. We have had performances from Matt Linnen and tribute acts and have had Southend United players attend. We have been on BBC Look East TV, BBC Essex, Radio Essex and had features in the Southend Evening Echo.
Freedom Ambassadors help us run the night. One trained as a doorman and does our door alongside the club doorman. Another DJ's for part of the evening along with our professional DJ, another does our TikTok, promotions and helps new guests settle in.
The Freedom Team consists of Paul, Kathy, DJ Jazzy, Shirley and Lucy. We all have attributes that have helped shape Freedom. Paul is a former nightclub manager who works as a DJ and is a Radio Presenter on Street Sounds Radio. Kathy has worked in theatres, hotels and banking and now works for herself in design and printing and runs Photobooths with Paul. DJ Jazzy is a maths teacher trained in SEN teaching, Shirley worked for Dick DeVignes and loved Freedom so joined the team.
We call ourselves the Freedom Family as we have been there for each other and all our guests through all the difficult times during lockdown.
We are so excited for Freedom's future!
