Prevention

If you are aware that your child has a tendency to bite, is showing signs of teething or mouthing everything, it is a good idea to offer alternative objects that are suitable for them to bite/chew on. These may include a clean folded muslin cloth, teething toys (those made with silicone and textured are particularly good).

If over 6 months of age you could offer cold cucmber sticks or watermelon as the coldness can help soothe sore gums.

If your child is over 1 year, you might consider offering a Chew Buddy (removed from the necklace for safety) for more information please see www.sensorydirect.com/chewbuddy-bangle-single and www.sensorydirect.com/arks-y-chew

If your child is teething, use of teething powders, gels or liquids can alleviate pain. Please see your pharmacist for advice on these products.

Safety ideas

  • ensure all toys are checked frequently for any loose or broken parts that could come off when chewed
  • check toys are age appropriate
  • if your child is a frequent biter; ensure their play is closely supervised in order to react appropriately to it, and therefore, helping to correct this as quickly as possible
