Bookstart is about encouraging parents and carers to share books and rhymes with young children from birth.

All children in Southend should receive free packs of reading goodies at key stages of their development: A Baby Bookstart Bag (gifted via health visitors at around 6 weeks old) and a Treasure Pack (gifted via early year's setting in the term after the child turns 3 years old).

Additionally, Booktouch Packs are available for visually impaired children; Bookshine Packs are available for children with a hearing impairment; Bookstart Star packs are available for children whose disability affects their fine motor skills. Contact Bookstart or your health visitor for more details.

If your child has not received a pack, please ask at your local library, talk to your health visitor or contact The Bookstart Team directly.

Additionally the Library Service offers Storyrhymes sessions in libraries for children under 5. These are FREE half hour sessions of stories and rhymes. No booking is necessary. For more details search 'Storyhymes' to see individul branch details, ask at your local library or contact The Bookstart Team directly on 01702 212120.
