Southend-on-Sea City Council are inviting older and frail residents to exchange their worn-out slippers for a free brand-new pair, to help reduce trips and falls in the home.
Following the success of previous Slipper Swap events in November 2023 and a smaller event in February 2024, which saw over 450 pairs of old slippers swapped for new ones, the council is bringing back this important initiative. The upcoming events will be held throughout September at various accessible venues across the city.
The new slippers are designed with features that enhance safety, such as secure fastenings and sturdy soles. In addition to receiving a new pair of slippers, residents will be connected with other support services where necessary.
Many older and frail individuals wish to remain independent in their homes. However, wearing worn-out slippers, walking barefoot, or in socks can significantly increase the risk of slips, trips, and falls, potentially leading to hospital visits or treatments that could diminish their independence and increase social isolation.
Councillor Maxine Sadza, cabinet member for social care and healthier communities, said: "I am delighted to see the Slipper Swap project return this September. Previous events helped hundreds of residents gain more independence, reassurance, and confidence with a safe pair of slippers.
"For the health and safety of our older and frail residents, it is crucial to wear a good pair of slippers. Proper slippers can play a significant role in preventing falls, while old, worn-out ones can lead to serious injuries, resulting in hospitalisation and a loss of independence and confidence."
This September, five Slipper Swap events will be held at accessible venues across the city. Residents at risk of falling can bring in their old slippers, discard them, and pick up a brand-new pair of anti-slip slippers for free. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn more about staying safe and well.
