Text reads World AIDS Day 2024. End HIV stigma. #TakeCharge. The Brook logo is at the bottom of the image in white on a dark green background, with a red swirl at the top of the image.

World AIDS Day takes place on 1st December every year, to continue raising awareness of the deadly syndrome.

1 in 16 people living with HIV in the UK do not know that they have the virus.

Knowing your HIV status puts you in control of your health. Thanks to effective testing and treatment, people living with HIV are very unlikely to develop AIDS and can live long and healthy lives.

Brook, Southend’s sexual health service provider, is committed to changing attitudes, challenging prejudices and championing equality. Their Take Charge campaign focuses on three key messages:

  • Take charge by testing regularly for HIV
  • Take charge by enjoying safer sex
  • Take charge by tackling the stigma that drives the epidemic
