Pyramid also offers a variety of training opportunities and products that focus on the initiation of communication and the design of effective educational environments. We present a unique blend of broad spectrum applied behaviour analysis, in conjunction with the development of functional communication skills. Our philosophy emphasises the individual needs of each learner.
We are the exclusive source of training and consultation for the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the Pyramid Approach to Education. Both PECS and the Pyramid are evidence-based strategies, with supportive research from countries around the world. What could be more valuable than giving your student/child the ability to communicate? PECS is a tried-and-tested approach that uses pictures to develop communication skills in children and adults with a wide range of learning difficulties. Easy to access, affordable to implement and scientifically supported as one of the most effective interventions, PECS is an opportunity to open the door to spontaneous communication.
This intensive, accredited, two-day training is designed to teach participants the theory behind the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the protocols for how to appropriately implement the six phases of PECS.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training.Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. An added attraction for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.
This workshop is the basic accredited training in PECS and recommended for parents as well as professionals.

"I have been using PECS in my classroom for 4 or 5 years, but had been taught by others, who had been on the course. Now I have it from the horses mouth, and it is much better. I can see WHY the students have got stuck at a particular phase and what I should have done about it. I wish I had the opportunity at the beginning to do the course, I think my students would have made better progress. Hopefully my classroom can be more effective now."

1. What does your service do?
PECS is a unique alternative/augmentative communication system developed in the USA in 1985 by Andy Bondy, Ph.D. and Lori Frost, M.S. CCC/SLP. PECS was first implemented with pre?school students diagnosed with Autism at the Delaware Autism Program. The findings from the program were that 76% of children placed on PECS acquired speech as either their sole communication system or augmented by a picture based system. Since then PECS has been implemented worldwide with a variety of learners of all ages who have various cognitive, physical and communication challenges.
PECS consist of six phases. It begins by teaching an individual to give a single picture of a desired item to a “communicative partner”, who immediately honours the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences. In the more advanced phases, individuals are taught to use modifiers, answer questions and comment.
We run approximately 95 PECS workshops per year, plus we also offer training in behaviour management, sexual and social safety for those with additional needs plus the highly acclaimed ‘Language of Emotions’ and more.We also offer consultancy in the form of in-school support, in-home support, in-community support. 1:1 consultation and remote support via interactive technology (skype or sightspeed).
