The Southend-on-Sea City Council Educational Psychology Service supports children and young people aged 0 to 25. We aim to improve educational outcomes and life chances for children and young people. Most of our work focuses on schools. We also collaborate with parent carers, early years providers, colleges and professionals in health, social care and voluntary organisations.
Our team includes:
- Educational Psychologists (EPs)
- Trainee EPs
- Assistant EPs
EPs are specialists with advanced qualifications in psychology, who work at multiple levels. Schools buy into our service, and we provide support tailored to their needs. Our work includes:
- addressing whole-school issues such as reducing bullying and improving playground culture
- training for staff and advice for leadership teams
- direct support for individual children
- supporting schools during critical incidents
- guidance on strategic planning
- helping to create inclusive environments where children thrive socially, emotionally and academically
When working with individual children, EPs:
- collaborate with parents, teachers and other professionals to understand strengths and needs
- provide tailored recommendations to help children succeed
- involve parents in the process
EPs also have a statutory role in the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process, assessing children and offering psychological advice.
We are currently developing a new Emotional Wellbeing Service. This free service for all Southend schools will address social, emotional and mental health needs in school communities through our unique psychological contribution.
We are committed to ethical practice, following Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) standards including:
- obtaining consent
- respecting confidentiality
- acting in the best interests of those we support
