Education, Health and Care Plans
Mainstream schools have resources to support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Schools and colleges have ways to meet most children and young people's needs. Some children and young people will get extra support. Their progress will be assessed and reviewed at what is known as SEN Support level.
You can ask for a formal assessment:
- if you are getting help at SEN Support level and;
- are not making the progress expected
This is called an Education, Health and Care needs assessment (EHCNA). Your parent carers or your school or college can ask for this. Or you can ask for it yourself if you are:
- between 16 to 25 and in education, or;
- under 19 and in a youth custodial establishment

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) are for children and young people who have SEND that cannot be met by the support usually available in your school or college. If you have an EHCP it will be reviewed every year. This is called an Annual Review.
