How can I make friends and get involved in my community?

Having and making friends is important but it can be difficult. You might:

  • get nervous about meeting new people or;
  • worry what people might think about you

This is very common. Some people have lots of friends. Others have 1 or 2. Some people prefer to spend time on their own, and that is fine too.

There are lots of things to do in the local area. We've listed some here, but also take a look at our events and activities section.

Essex Fire Cadets is a 3 year programme for 14 to 17 year olds. It runs one evening a week for 40 weeks. You can get involved and learn about:

  • hose running
  • breathing apparatus
  • search and rescue
  • and much more!

You can also do your Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

No charge

The Southend Youth Support Service run inclusive games and social nights.

Under £10

Southend Mencap 16+ Social Club. A sports and social club for those aged 16 to 25 with learning disabilities. The club runs on Mondays between 6 and 9pm. It costs £6 per session.

Over £10

Total Palace - youth theatre groups for young people who identify as neurodiverse or have additional needs.

Various costs

  • Southend Deaf Pub - a social group for older young people and adults who are hearing impaired or deaf.
  • Friends and Places Together is for those aged 14 years and over. Meet new people while playing football, swimming, bowling or Lazertag, and much more!
  • Project 49 is for over 18's who have learning disabilities. You can get involved in art projects, cookery, media groups, cycling and much more!

Voices of the East forum

Voices of the East is for children and young people with SEND aged 5 to 25. It provides an opportunity for children and young people to:

  • speak out about things that matter to them
  • meet new people
  • hear inspirational stories

Action is taken on the things discussed!

Online meetings happen every 1 to 2 months. They run at different times so you can attend during or after school. There will also be chances to get involved in person. Meetings are interactive and include games.

Traverse group for young people

Traverse is an opportunity for young people who are interested in health services.You can:

  • learn about services
  • share your views

The group have:

  • interviewed system leaders
  • attended a youth conference
  • done team building tasks

For every full meeting you go to you get a £30 Amazon voucher. The group meets around every 6 weeks. Virtual meetings last up to one and a half hours. In person meetings last up to 3 hours.
