Supporting your child through fussy eating

Fussy eating is a common phase many children go through. Here are some tips to help make mealtimes easier and to encourage healthy eating habits.

Try a 'Trying Plate'

This allows your child to have control over which foods they try without feeling pressured. A separate plate can be used to explore new foods without them touching their main meal.

Avoid Labelling Foods as 'Treats'

It's important not to place higher value on certain foods like desserts. This helps prevent the idea that eating certain foods is a reward, which can lead to unhealthy food associations.

Set Regular Meal Times

Establishing consistent meal times helps your child develop a regular eating routine, which can reduce mealtime stress and anxiety.

Eat Together

Family mealtimes can help create a positive, relaxed atmosphere. Being a good role model at the table, eating the same foods, and using positive praise can make a big difference.

Too Much Too Soon

Reduce overwhelm for a fussier child by simply giving less. Build up to a portion over time rather than adding loads and getting discouraged when it comes back uneaten

If you're concerned about your child’s eating habits, including weight loss, weight gain, or nutrient intake, please contact your GP or pharmacist for professional advice.
