Joint Area SEND revisit (local area) - May 2021
In May 2021, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) revisited the area of Southend-on-Sea to see if progress had been made to address the significant weaknesses.
The revisit letter noted:
- a 'palpable change' in the culture of the area's partnerships and;
- greater commitment to joint working to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND
- the area had made enough progress in addressing 3 of the 4 significant weaknesses identified at the initial inspection

Local area leaders submitted an updated action plan to:
- the Department for Education (DfE) and;
- NHS England
This set out how it would tackle the remaining area of weakness: joint commissioning and strategic leadership.
