Find out if you're a carer

Do you know that support is available in Southend-on-Sea if you look after or support someone, emotionally or physically?

Who is a Carer?

If you provide support and care anyone 18 and over who, because of illness or disability, cannot manage without help, then you are recognised in law as a carer. Many people become carers at some point in their lives even though they may work or have other responsibilities. Some people are carers without knowing it.

If you are a carer, help is available from the Carers First, the Council and your GP. There are also local services and technology that could help you.

The person you care for could be a:

  • husband, wife or partner
  • family member such as a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter or grandparent
  • friend or neighbour

The support you provide could be:

  • washing and dressing
  • shopping
  • food preparation
  • help with laundry
  • help with housework
  • taking someone to regular appointments
  • keeping someone company
  • helping someone take medication
  • provide emotional support

Once you recognise that you are a carer, you can get the support and information you need through a carers assessment.
