How to prepare for the assessment

Prior to your assessment, it may be helpful to write a day-to-day diary of the caring tasks you do. Some of the areas you will be asked about in your assessment includes:

  • your personal, family situation and history
  • the people you care for
  • the care and support you provide, and which parts are most important
  • other caring responsibilities you may have (for example children or family members)
  • your living situation (housing, finance, transport, domestic tasks)
  • the impact of caring on your social life, family and work life
  • the impact of caring on your physical, mental and emotional health
  • what support you receive from others (for example family, friends, community, GP) and what support you have identified you need
  • and your ability to continue to care
