What is a carer’s assessment?

If you provide unpaid care and support to someone over the age of 18 because they have a disability or illness, then you are legally entitled to a Carers' Assessment. A carer's assessment is a conversation about your wellbeing, how you feel and identifying support for you. The assessment will not be testing your capability as a carer.

Carers assessments can be completed alone or combined with the person you care for. The assessment will encourage you to talk about:

  • your feelings
  • your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing
  • your role as a carer, and whether this will be a long-term mole
  • how your role as a carer affects your work, finance, health, education, leisure, wellbeing and relationships
  • what your goals are and what support you may need in your caring role
